Contemporary Folk Tale Writing Workshop

Tuesdays 20, 27 July and 3 August
5.30pm – 7pm, £20 for three sessions (£15 concessions)

The Study

Eastern European folktales are a fundamental inspiration to the fanciful imagery created by Gert and Uwe Tobias. This is a three week introductory workshop that will teach you a history of folktales and the basic skills you can use to write them.  The workshop will be taught by Dr. Simon Heywood.  Heywood lectures in folklore and storytelling at Derby University.

You can pay for this workshop at our shop.  Please bring your receipt to the first class.

Below is syllabus for the workshop.

Session 1. The forms of the folktale: myths, legends and wondertales. A talk and practical workshop introduction to the different kinds of traditional narrative and the forms they take in contemporary art and popular culture. The folktale is a global art-form and a seemingly endless creative resource for art and entertainment which speaks directly to the issues we face in our lives. This workshop looks at the kinds of folktales which have been recorded and some of the basic patterns which underlie them.

Session 2. European Folktales, World Folktales: a closer practical look at some major folktales of Europe, their place in world culture, and their value as an inspiration for creative work. This workshop looks more closely at some examples of the folktale, their historical context and their creative potential.

Session 3: Telling your own tale: a practical creative writing and storytelling workshop. This workshop aims to leave participants with a short finished piece of creative work, or a plan for a larger project, based on creative engagement with folktales.

Nottingham Contemporary's programme of talks and discussions is jointly supported by The University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University.
